What is the Best Time of Year to Paint the Exterior of my Home?

If you are planning to paint the exterior of your home, there are many important details to think about, including budget, paint type and color, and any repair work needed. The timing of the project is another important consideration. While the interior of a home can be painted throughout the year, painting the exterior is a little different.

The temperature outside can greatly impact the look and durability of a newly painted exterior. The biggest concern is if the temperature is too cold or if there is a lot of rain or humidity. Most exterior paint is able to fully dry when the temperature is at least 50 degrees Fahrenheit. If a home’s exterior is painted when it’s below this temperature outside, the paint isn’t able to adhere properly to the siding and it doesn’t fully dry. This often causes the paint to peel or flake or bubbles to form in the paint.

Since the outside air temperature needs to be above 50 degrees, we recommend planning your exterior painting project for late spring, summer, or early fall. If you are planning to work with a professional painting company for your exterior painting project, it’s a good idea to schedule an estimate for your project once you have a general idea of your budget. Work schedules for the warmer months fill up quickly, so it’s ideal to have an estimate two to five months before you’d like the project completed.
